LAKE CITY, S.C. (WCIV) — An arrest has been made in the hit-and-run death of Kingstree High School Girl's Basketball Coach Sonya Burgess.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Daveline Holmes is charged with reckless homicide and leaving the scene of a collision involving death.
Holmes is the woman in the surveillance photos the SCHP released Monday.
Her bond was set at $115,000.
"The teamwork that led to this arrest is the perfect example of the partnerships that we have with fellow law enforcement and are continuing to cultivate with the communities we serve," SCDPS Director Leroy Smith said.
According to a SCHP spokesperson Trooper Bridget Wyant, Holmes was pulling out into traffic from the gas station parking lot and pulled out into Burgess' lane of traffic causing her to swerve.
Officials said Burgess overcorrected, which caused the Ford Expedition to overturn. Burgess was ejected from her car and ended up lying in the roadway and that's when a second unidentified driver ran her over.
"I want to commend everyone involved in this situation for the outstanding work that led to an arrest in this tragic collision," said Highway Patrol Col. Mike Oliver. "Our thoughts and prayers are with this family and everyone involved."
Troopers said they do know the identity of that second driver. The driver turned themselves in and have been questioned but they are not facing charges until autopsy results come back and determine a cause of death.
