Weather grounds several flights to Charleston

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - Inclement weather in the Charleston metro area has diverted a number of flights slated to arrive at Charleston International Airport between Friday night and Sunday.

Airport officials said Saturday that delays and cancellations could persist into Sunday morning.

"Airport staff is in contact with the National Weather Service, and they are predicting that the inclement weather will continue throughout the night and clear up by approximately 9 a.m. Sunday," Becky Beaman said in a statement.

Larger aircraft are flying.

Flight Tracker showed Friday night three flights from JFK Airport in New York City that have been diverted to other cities and six other flights from Philadelphia and Charlotte that have been canceled. There are also more than a dozen flights that are delayed due to weather.

Airport officials said they anticipate a number of flights delays and cancellations on Saturday morning as well.

Currently, there are a handful of delayed departures and two flights from Charleston to Charlotte were canceled Saturday morning. There are another half-dozen delayed flights coming into Charleston.

Officials advise air travelers to check with the airlines before arriving at the airport on Saturday.

Meteorologist Sonya Stevens said a storm system will slowly move from the Gulf coast to the mid-Atlantic through early Sunday. Periods of showers and even a thunderstorm will continue through Saturday afternoon with rain heavy at times.
