North Charleston, S.C. – Goaltender Ryan Zapolski recorded his ECHL-leading sixth shutout of the season stopping 32 shots to help the South Carolina Stingrays (29-23-2-3) defeat the Greenville Road Warriors (30-19-2-4) 2-0 at the North Charleston Coliseum Friday night. The Stingrays extended their point streak to a season-high seven games (6-0-1-0) and it is the second time this season South Carolina recorded back-to-back shutouts.
Stingrays forward Jay Silvia kicked off the scoring late in the second period with his first ECHL goal deflecting a shot from defenseman Luka Vidmar between the legs of Road Warriors goaltender Connor Knapp (L, 20 saves on 22 shots) at 15:56. Forward Justin Courtnall added the second assist. Through two periods, the Road Warriors led the Stingrays in shots 22-15.
Forward Phil Mangan made it 2-0 at the 1:58 mark of the third period capitalizing on a breakaway after serving a high-sticking penalty. Forward Andrew Cheriwchan found Mangan at the red line and just out of the penalty box with a tape-to-tape pass up the middle of the ice. Defenseman Art Bidlevskii registered the second assist. The Stingrays finished the contest 0-for-2 on the power play while the Road Warriors went 0-for-3.
