CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — Hundreds waited outside to enter the funeral of Kingstree High School's girls' basketball coach Sonya Burgess. Leading the processional into the gym was her husband, Marcus, and their three young children.

"Sonya lived a complete life. Sonya lived the life many of us are trying to get to," said family friend Freya Sullivan.

Her Jaguar team entered in by twos wearing their black and gold warm-ups. Many of the speakers took the time to tell the team what they meant to their coach.

"Ms. Burgess changed your lives. Make sure you do 110 percent, leave it all out on the court like she did. At everything she coached her heart out because she wanted you to excel," said one speaker.

Even other coaches in different districts told the capacity crowd at the gym she was always willing to lend a hand.

"If you needed help with a problem you could always count on Sonya. Sonya will be greatly missed but never forgotten," said Brian Rozzelle.

Kingstree advanced to the semifinals after Burgess' life-ending car accident, but the team was told to keep look forward.

"On this day next year I'm going to say to you: you will win the State Championship," said Rozzelle.

Not only did the crowd honor the life of Burgess, they also honored the new life she was carrying at the time of her death, only to be known as Baby Burgess.
