CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Work is under way on revising the management plan for the sprawling Francis Marion National Forest northeast of Charleston.

It's been nearly two decades since the plan for how forest lands should be used was last revised. That 1996 plan generally dealt with recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Hugo which wiped out about a third of the forest with its 135 mph winds in 1989.

One challenge for planners is that urban areas near the forest have greatly expanded during the past couple of decades.

The U.S. Forest Service is taking public comment on a new plan through mid-April.

A hearing in North Charleston on Tuesday focuses on forest recreation. The idea is to find out what visitors like about the forest and the recreational opportunities it can offer.
