CONWAY, S.C. (WCIV) – A 19-year-old Coastal Carolina University student was shot and killed at the University Place campus housing complex Tuesday night.
Horry County officials say the suspect is still at large, leaving students on campus scared as they mourn the loss of a fellow student.
"I just saw him lying there and I didn't know what to do," said CCU student Katrina Sheleski. "I was just scared -- I still am -- my voice is still shaking I'm so scared."
"I saw them lift up a sheet and it was full of blood," she said.
School officials say CCU sophomore Anthony Liddell was killed in the shooting. Police say Liddell was shot at least once. Liddell was taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center where he later died.
An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.
Students say they never thought something like this would happen on their campus.
"I had to call my family and tell them I love them because it hurt, it really hurt," said CCU student Tony Gibbs. "It's tough, it's really tough. I never expected something like this to happen on campus at all."
The universitiy's president sent out a statement to the CCU community Wednesday morning, expressing his condolences.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Anthony Liddell. Tragedies such as these anywhere in our society are senseless. Precious loss of life at such an early age affects us all. Our primary goal is to ensure the safety and security of our students. We will continue to do all that we can with all the resources necessary to make sure that our students are safe and secure. We only pray that an event like this never happens on our campus or any college campus again," he said.
A lockdown has been lifted for Coastal Carolina campus buildings and residence halls. School officials say counseling services will be available on campus for students and all classes will be held as scheduled on Wednesday.
