CONWAY, S.C. (WPDE/WCIV) – The search for the person who shot and killed a Coastal Carolina University student Tuesday night is still under way.
University police said they are looking for one person, but have not released a description.
Anthony Liddell, 19, died in the emergency room at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center Tuesday night, about an hour after he was shot in the chest at the university's official off-campus apartment complex.
Who did it, why and where that person is now are the questions state law enforcement officers are working to answer.
According to university officials, the first 911 call came in shortly before 7:30 p.m. An incident report from campus police states officers arrived at University Place to find a man lying in the parking lot, surrounded by people trying to render aid.
The victim was Liddell, a sophomore from Bennettsville majoring in sports medicine.
An autopsy showed the cause of death was massive hemorrhaging from a gunshot wound to the chest. The coroner's office said police would not release information about other wounds.
The shooting led to a campus-wide lockdown Tuesday night that was lifted only after school officials determined there was no threat to other students.
Classes were held as normal on Wednesday.
The State Law Enforcement Division took over the investigation with a crime scene unit processing the scene and agents interviewing witnesses.
The initial police report shows patrol units scoured the area Tuesday night, but the only suspect description was a dark-colored sedan that left the area after the shooting.
Counseling was available for students Wednesday at Lackey Chapel, as well as other locations around campus.
Chaplains say a steady stream of students stopped in because they said Liddell was a well-liked student and had a wide circle of friends.
"A lot of them are asking questions. ‘How could this happen to such a nice guy? To somebody so close to me? To somebody that didn't seem to have an enemy in the world?" said Tom Woodle, CCU's chaplain.
Woodle said the answer he gives to that question is that evil can happen any time, any place and that no one knows why this shooting happened, but that hopefully authorities will find the answer soon.
