LIVERMORE, Calif., Feb. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The City of Livermore will launch a bold plan to dramatically reduce citywide energy costs and save taxpayers more than $10 million over the next 25 years.
With the help of Chevron Energy Solutions, the city will be incorporating solar installations to generate clean, renewable power for the city's Civic Center, main library, airport, and other municipal facilities. Combined with a range of energy efficiency measures aimed at slashing utility and maintenance costs, the city anticipates savings that can be reinvested into municipal services.
"This is an extraordinary opportunity for the city to demonstrate its continuing commitment to both local business and taxpayers, who count on us to maximize every dollar," said Marc Roberts, Livermore's City Manager. "Our Mayor and City Council have always embraced innovative ways to serve our residents and businesses, and this project is an example of that innovation."
The central component of the energy efficiency program, the retrofit of 7,000 streetlights to LED technology, is expected to deliver millions in savings to the city, due to lower utility and maintenance costs. By partnering with Livermore-based BridgeLux, a leading developer and manufacturer of LED lighting technologies and solutions, the city is helping to support and scale a growing local business, and boost its local economy.
"The energy projects we are embarking on demonstrate our firm commitment to spurring innovation and creating efficiencies, and affirms our partnerships with our local business community, the engine of Livermore's continued growth and success," said Mayor John Marchand. "For years, the city has worked closely with local companies to help them scale, and position them for future growth and additional local job creation. These projects will provide a vital boost to local businesses and attract investment into Livermore's booming green economy."
The City of Livermore selected Chevron Energy Solutions, a leader in delivering renewable and energy efficiency projects for local governments and educational institutions, to develop, design and construct the project. "We are excited to deliver this project to the city, the residents, and businesses of Livermore," said Chevron Energy Solutions President Jim Davis. "The leadership shown by the Mayor and City Council should serve as an example for cities across the state and the country."
