Additional parishes join Episcopal Church suit

ST. GEORGE, S.C. (AP) - Three more parishes that split from the national Episcopal Church have joined a lawsuit seeking to keep the property of the parishes that have left.

There are now 34 parishes as parties in litigation brought by The Diocese of South Carolina asking a judge to keep a half billion dollars in church property under the control of the diocese and not the national church.

The diocese said Thursday it has changed the lawsuit to include The Episcopal Church in South Carolina as a defendant. That's the name being used by parishes in the eastern and lower part of the state staying with the national church.

The Diocese of South Carolina split with the nation church last year in disputes over ordination of homosexuals and other issues.
