Charleston police, SC corrections capture fugitive

Posted: Updated:

WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCIV) - Charleston City Police and members of the South Carolina Department of Corrections captured a man early Friday morning who escaped from a pre-release facility.

According to a police report, officers from the two agencies went to the Georgetown Apartments on Orange Grove Road around 2:30 a.m. to track down Travis Hammit, who had escaped from Coastal Pre-Release Center earlier in the day.

Officers met with Hammit's grandfather, who told them the man had been at their home earlier asking for money to get to Summerville. Hammit's grandfather did not give Hammit money, he told officers, adding that he thought the wanted man was still in the area since he did not have money or a phone.

Officers found Hammit hiding between the apartment complex's pool house and a fence. He was then arrested, police said.
