Expanded war on wild hogs, coyotes has begun in SC

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Hundreds of South Carolina hunters are lining up to hunt wild hogs and coyotes after dark.

The State of Columbia reports (http://bit.ly/YjzKwc ) that more than 500 hunters registered to shoot the invasive creatures in the first week of legal night hunting for them.

The night hunting season continues until July.

Licensed hunters don't need to apply for permits, but must notify the Department of Natural Resources 48 hours before the first time they plan to hunt on a specific property. That will help law enforcement officers react to complaints of gunfire noise after dark.

Night hunters using center-fire rifles must be shooting from at least 10 feet above ground, a measure designed to ensure bullets don't carry far past the targets.
