Hanahan police chase ends in Charleston, suspect at large

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - Police are trying to find the person who led officers on a chase from Hanahan to downtown Charleston Monday afternoon.

According to police, they responded to an apartment on Old Point Road, after the victim claimed her boyfriend beat her up.  Police say the suspect took off in her car, a blue Ford Crown Victoria and led cops on a high speed chase.

Police later identified the suspect as Barry Jerod Stanley based on information from the victim. However, the victim provided police the wrong name. On Tuesday, police correctly identified the subject as Deangelo Watson.

"The name that we were given was somebody else that she knew that she wanted to get in trouble," said Lt. Michael Fowler with Hanahan Police.

When Watson made it into North Charleston, he reportedly hit a mini-van at Rivers and Aviation avenues, but did not stop. North Charleston police said no one was injured in that accident.

Hanahan police said Waton threw what appeared to be drugs out of the car during the chase. An officer retrieved a clear plastic bag with pieces of "an off-white soap-like substance" which was field tested for 39 grams of cocaine base.

The car chase ended on Maple Street in the Wagener Terrace neighborhood of peninsular Charleston. Watson got out of the car and ran, police said.

He has not been captured.

If you have any information on his whereabouts, you're asked to call Crimestoppers at 843-554-1111.
