Road improvement project may boost Georgetown tourism

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, S.C. (WCIV) – A busy intersection where many drivers pass through the city of Georgetown will get facelift.

Jonathan Heald is the new director of public services for the city of Georgetown. He says it is a road improvement project that the Department of Transportation is spearheading at Highway 17 and Highway 701, an area that takes a heavy beating.

"The pavement was beginning to wrinkle because of the heavy trucks that drive that road. It puts a lot of weight pressure which causes a pot hole or a ripple in the pavement which may lead to accidents," he said.

Currently, the preliminary planning is underway. Heald says the will smooth over road conditions for drivers.

"It's a very important project for city of Georgetown in that we want traffic to move safely through the city we don't want delays and we dint want to cause any problems," he said.

As part of the project, the city has to relocate utilities.

The city is taking the improvement project as an opportunity to beautify the roadway so people are not just passing through but stopping into town.

"Hopefully we can steer them in the direction for some tourism activities," Cindi Howard, risk manager for the city.

There is no set date for this project.
