CSU falls to Clermson 3-1

Posted: Updated:

CLEMSON, S.C. – Charleston Southern freshman Andrew Tomasovich held Clemson to four hits and three earned runs in his first career complete game, but CSU couldn't generate offense of its own in a 3-1 loss to Clemson on Wednesday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

The loss drops the Bucs to 8-10 overall, while the Tigers move to 10-5. Charleston Sothern now turns its attention to Big South play, which opens with a three-game series beginning on Friday at Liberty.

Tomasovich (LP, 0-3) took the loss for the Bucs, but turned in his best outing of the season. He tossed a complete game and held the Tigers to just four hits in 8.0 innings of work. He struck out five.

The freshman settled down after surrendering two runs in the first inning following a leadoff walk and a bunt single to give Clemson an early 2-0 lead. The would be about it for the Tigers offense, but CSU failed to capitalize with runners in scoring position.

CSU threatened in the fourth as centerfielder Bobby Ison reached on a leadoff double. The Bucs would put two runners on with no outs as Jaren Suster reached on an error. Tigers' starter Matthew Cronover (WP, 2-0) worked out of the jam with some defensive help as Ison was thrown out trying to score on a single by Alex Tomasovich to end the inning.

CSU scored and got the tying runs on in the eighth as an Ison double scored Chase Shelton for the Bucs' lone run of the game. Reliever Kyle Schnell came on for Clemson to induce a fly ball out of Sustar and end the Bucs' threat.

The Bucs also threatened in the ninth as Brian Welch reached on a throwing error and Tomasovich was hit by a pitch, but Schnell was able to work out of the jam with a fly out and a game-ending double play to seal the win for Clemson.

Ison was the only player to record multiple hits. He was 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. He is 7-for-9 on the week as CSU heads into the weekend.
