Police charge Hanahan mom with drug offense, obstruction

Posted: Updated:

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) – A Lowcountry mother has been charged with obstruction of justice and two counts of unlawful conduct toward a child after police say she led them on a chase for an innocent man.

Initially, 27-year-old Evette Nelson claimed to be the victim of domestic violence. She told police 29-year-old Barry Stanley attacked her.

But a day later, Nelson showed back up at the Hanahan Police Department saying she lied about who her attacker was because Stanley was an old boyfriend and wanted to get him in trouble.

That's when police say Nelson pinned the attack on Deangelo Watson. In response, Hanahan Police officials released Watson's photo to the media.

Police say Watson saw himself on television and turned himself in to the Charleston Police Department stating his innocence. After an interview and investigation, police realized Watson was not connected to Nelson's assault, but Stanley was.

Police believe Nelson intentionally led police toward the wrong man.

Shortly after, Nelson was arrested at her home where police found cocaine stashed away in a microwave near her two small children.

Nelson was given a $120,00 bond for all three charges. She is set to have a second court hearing in May.
