Charleston, S.C. (WCIV) -- The bell choir missing West Ashley mother Gayle McCaffrey once played in, now plays to honor her.

"Gayle meant so much to the church and I know the church was such a big part of her life and she felt like it was extended family. We wanted to recognize her today," said First Baptist Church Pastor Marshall Blalock.

He recalls when the congregation first learned she was missing.

"Gayle going missing was traumatic for the church family. Her two children are just so important to her, and she was always here with those two children. We just couldn't imagine what could have happened to her," Blalock said.

Police reports show Gayle McCaffrey was last seen on St. Patrick's Day 2012. Her husband Robert McCaffrey told deputies he last saw his wife around 10:00 p.m. before he left home to drive to Easley.

He reported her missing the next day.

"We really felt like it was a blessing for us to be able to remember her and honor her memory and to ask prayer for her family," said Blalock.

Outside the McCaffrey's West Ashley home there are signs asking neighbors to leave a light on in her memory. Family members have placed candles to light the stairs McCaffrey would use to come home.

"It has been a long time unfortunately, and I didn't know her personally but it's kind of hit home, here since we live in the neighborhood," said Susan English who lives nearby.

English said it doesn't feel like it's been a whole year as she and her two daughters placed a candle on McCaffrey's porch on Sunday.

"I personally haven't given up that we will find her one day. For her sisters and for her kids, I think that would be a lot of closure for her," said English.

Charleston County Sheriff's detectives are still actively investigating the case. Robert McCaffrey was named a suspect in the case last May.

No arrests have been made.
