CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV/AP) -- Senator Lindsey Graham is in Charleston Monday for a South Carolina State Ports Authority Board meeting.
The senator discuss an update on the Army Corps of Engineers harbor deepening project. Graham and Lt. Col. Ed Chamberlayne with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Charleston meet with the board at midday Monday.
This comes just after the corps warned that automatic federal spending cuts could delay the $300 million effort to deepen the Charleston Harbor shipping channel.
A draft environmental impact study is expected next year. But there's a chance that could be delayed and the entire project moved back if fewer workers can work fewer hours on the deepening project.
But a budget resolution released last week by the
U.S. Senate Budget Committee calls for increasing the construction
program budget for the Corps of Engineers.
It says that will allow the corps to deepen Charleston Harbor.
