Forestry Commission lifts red flag alert for SC

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCIV) -- The statewide Red Flag Alert has been lifted by the South Carolina Forestry Commission.

In a release by the SCFC, officials said rain, higher humidity, less wind and cooler temperatures helped lessen the risk of fire.

A burning ban is still in effect in Horry County due to a major structure fire in the area.

Officials put out a reminder that debris burning, even where allowed, leads to nearly half of all wildfires in the state and asks for residents to think before they burn.

A report from the SCFC shows the number of fires crews responded to during the red flag alert.

In Colleton County, there were six fire, four of which were caused by burning debris.

In Berkeley County, firefighter responded to nine fires. Three of the fires were caused by burning debris. There were two fires each in Charleston and Dorchester county that warranted a response by fire crews.

All four of those fires were due to debris burning.
