CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Charleston police responded to Rice Drive Thursday night after reports of shots fired came from a nearby home.

According to a police report, 41-year-old Donald Jerome Gendron, an employee of the Army Corps of Engineers, was loading a rifle and threatening to shoot himself when the gun went off.

Police say his wife ran upstairs to check on the baby whose room was directly above Gendron because the gun was pointing towards the ceiling when it went off.

Gendron is charged with unlawful conduct towards a child and discharging a firearm within city limits.

Police do not report any injuries.

The wife told police they had been arguing about "alcohol consumption."
