DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- From the Lowcountry to a country overseas, one local organization is raising money to build a new medical facility one putt at a time.

First it was a medical center in Uganda, but now Palmetto Medical Initiative, known as PMI, wants to build a similar facility in Nicaragua.

"We are going to develop our medical center there with all the supplies and medical equipment that you can imagine go into a project of that type," said Matthew Alexander, the co-founder of Palmetto Medical Initiative.

The money for this project will come from a local golf tournament called the Needtobreathe Classic.

"They have had tremendous success with getting more golfers out this year, with getting a lot of new sponsors to the table. It's been amazing how we have just gotten so much press even over the last month which is great for us," said Alexander. "The more that people know about what we are doing the better."

And the reason for the increased number of participants is all thanks to the support of the local band, Needtobreathe.

"We really feel that the involvement with Needtobreathe has raised even more awareness not only just here locally but it seems as thought nationally so we have really doubled our field of players and sponsors so we really feel like the celebrity piece of it has really helped bring awareness to the tournament," said Lynnae Penze, Commonwealth Financial Group's marketing director.

There will be numerous musicians and athletes out on this golf course on Tuesday all raising money for PMI.

Almost 200 golfers have already registered for the tournament tomorrow morning at the Daniel Island Club Golf Course. Those involved are hoping to raise $50,000.
