ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) -- The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting death of a man by an Orangeburg County sheriff's deputy.

Deputy Coroner Sean Fogle says 42-year-old Barry Caldwell of Orangeburg died in the shooting Tuesday afternoon near an elementary school.

Sheriff Leroy Ravenell says one of his officers responded to a harassment call when the shooting occurred.

Residents in the neighborhood say Caldwell had a shovel during the confrontation with the officer.

District 5 school spokesman Greg Carson says Whittaker Elementary School students were held inside when the shooting occurred. Carson says students were released after officers told them the situation was under control.
