Towne Centre's Belk to become a flagship store

Posted: Updated:

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- Southern retailer, Belk, is turning it's Towne Centre location into a flagship store, adding 58,000 square feet.

According to a release from the company, the expansion will cost around $10.2 million and will turn the old Earthfare next door into a separate men's clothing department.

A parking deck, new fitting rooms, restrooms and seating areas are also in the works.

The current store is 82,000 square feet in size and, after a two phase expansion, will grow to 140,000 square feet.

The first expansion phase will be the separate Belk Men's store which will open in November 2013.  The second phase involves remodeling and expanding the existing building by 30,000 square feet and building the parking deck. The second phase is scheduled to be completed by October 2014.

"I love the Charleston market and its sense of style," said Tim Belk, the company's Chairman and CEO. "The residence base and the strong tourist market are a powerful combination. We feel this market is a good candidate for a flagship store."

Shoe shoppers will have a twice-the-size department to peruse with new inventory from Isaac Mizrahi, Ugg and Via Spiga.

The cosmetics area will have some new names as well with Channel, MAC and Bobbi Brown.

Women's apparel will also grow with larger assortments from Ralph Lauren and Michael Kors, as well as new offerings from French Connection, BCBG, and Free People.
