SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) - Within hours of a bank robbery at a Summerville branch of First Federal Bank, police said they had the man responsible in custody.

According to Summerville police, the robbery happened around 3:45 p.m. Thursday. Witnesses described the robber as a white man close to 5 feet tall weighing 130 pounds.

The robber was later identified as Charles Johnson III, police said. He has been charged with entering a financial institution with the intent to steal.

Police say Johnson either grew impatient or was spooked, but he walked out of the bank empty-handed.

Police said Johnson entered the bank, demanded money, told employees that he had a bomb and then left. Employees told police the man did not show a weapon during the ordeal.

Police say the employee to whom Johnson handed the note then went over to talk to a co-worker. They say Johnson then left the bank and was arrested several hours later.

"Probably about an hour-and-a-half, two hours later, an off-duty Goose Creek officer happened to recognize him from some photos we had sent out and was able to apprehend him at the Walmart in Goose Creek," said Capt. Jon Rogers with Summerville police.

Johnson's bond was set at $90,000.
