HANAHAN, S.C. (WCIV) - The students of Hanahan Middle School earned $30,000 for their school and were recognized nationally as winners of the Lexus Eco Challenge grand prize.
There were two grand prize awards given out. The other team to win was from Lagrangeville, New York.
The Hanahan "Eco Hawks" aimed to increase the recycling rate across the state of South Carolina.
Hanahan's $30,000 grand prize win in the Lexus Eco Challenge – based on the students collecting nearly 70,000 bottle caps -- follows three straight years of Eco Challenge wins for the school, although it is the first grand prize.
The caps fill dozens of boxes at the school. Lexus called the "Eco Hawks" an inspiration to government and residents to raise the recycling rate.
