Recount scheduled in SC's 1st District race

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A recount of ballots is scheduled in the GOP primary in South Carolina's 1st Congressional District.

But Friday's recount isn't expected to alter the outcome sending former Gov. Mark Sanford and former Charleston County councilman Curtis Bostic into the April 2 Republican runoff.

Bostic outdistanced state Sen. Larry Grooms for second by just under 500 votes. Grooms has conceded saying the margin is too big to make up in a recount.

But under state law the difference was less than 1% requiring elections officials in five counties along the south coast to recount ballots cast in precincts that are that are within the district.

The winner of the April 2 runoff faces Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Bush in the special election in May.
