Summerville High self reports ineligible player to SCHSL

Posted: Updated:

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) - Summerville High School self-reported an ineligible player on its baseball team to the South Carolina High School League this week.

According to a statement released by the school, officials there learned that the ineligible player has been on the Green Wave baseball team for the last four games. The school said it learned during its investigation that the unnamed student had transferred from a local private school.

Before he left the school, Summerville administrators said, he played in a [pre-season baseball scrimmage for the private school.

At Summerville High, the player dressed out for the game against Goose Creek and was a pinch-hitter for the three games that followed.

Last year, Goose Creek High School self-reported an ineligible player on its football team after studying transcripts from several different schools. The SCHSL ended up barring the team from competing in the playoffs, preventing the team from picking up another state title.

The aftermath of the league's decision has led to a number of bills being filed in Columbia to disband or significantly change the league. The bill introduced by Rep. Daning has passed the state House and is now in the Senate.

The version of the bill that passed removed the call to disband the league.

The SCHSL has worked on plans to change its constitution since the ordeal with Goose Creek. The league recently met in Charleston to discuss changes.

Legislators asked the league to make four changes, which included a tiered penalty system, a third level of appeals that is independent of the executive committee, alternative options to file appeals and better geographic representation on the executive board.

In the conference, the league recommended changes for all but the geographic representation request. Currently, the executive committee is made up of people from north of Interstate 95.

Daning said he wants to see statewide representation on the board.

The amended bill that passed the House also gives the SCHSL one year to make the geographic adjustments to the board.
