CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The votes have been recounted in South Carolina's 1st Congressional District and the numbers confirm that former Gov. Mark Sanford will face former Charleston County Councilman Curtis Bostic in the April 2 GOP runoff.
The recount Friday was needed because Bostic outdistanced state Sen. Larry Grooms for second by just under 500 votes in Tuesday's voting. Grooms has conceded, saying the margin is too big to make up in a recount.
But under state law the difference was less than 1% so election officials in five counties along the south coast finished their recount early Friday afternoon.
The recount shows Bostic defeated Grooms by a slightly larger margin of 524 votes.
The winner of the April 2 runoff faces Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Bush in the special election in May.
