Firefighters battle blaze at West Ashley apartment complex

Posted: Updated:

WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCIV) - Firefighters finished putting out an early morning fire at a West Ashley apartment complex around 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

According to fire officials, fire crews were called to the Hampton Point Apartments on Sam Rittenberg Boulevard shortly before 7 a.m. Sunday. Crews were on scene within four minutes of the call, officials said.

When firefighters arrived, there was smoke and visible flames coming through the roof of the laundry and maintenance building. Firefighters say they believe a lightning strike started the fire.

Firefighters tried to enter the building, but had to vacate it because of structural concerns. There was also a reported explosion, which fire officials believed to be related to the products being stored in the maintenance shop.

Charleston Fire Department officials say they had the fire under control by 9 a.m. but were still working to put it out in the rainy weather conditions.

No injuries were sustained in the blaze, but firefighters say the building is completely lost.
