Man wanted in attempted murder mistakenly released

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, S.C. (AP) - Authorities are trying to find a 19-year-old Georgetown man wanted for attempted murder who was mistakenly released from a state prison in Columbia before he served his whole sentence.

Corrections Department spokesman Clark Newsom says Dwaine Johnson Jr. was serving a six-month sentence for throwing bodily fluids on a detention officer when he was released Wednesday from the Kirkland Reception and Evaluation Center.

Newsom says Johnson was supposed to be in state prison until October, and then he was to be released to Georgetown County officials because he had a warrant out against him for attempted murder.

Authorities think Johnson is likely in the Georgetown area.

Newsom says Corrections Department officials are investigating what led to Johnson's mistaken release.
