SC strawberry farmers worry about cold

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Strawberry farmers in northern South Carolina are worried about the cold.

The Greenville News reported (http://grnol.co/15KzGtK) growers fear the cold weather will destroy the blooms and the crop.

Ruth Ann Lynn of the Sandy Flat Berry Patch northwest of Greer says her family has been using frost protection for the blooms and berries for several days. An overhead irrigation system keeps water on the plants, freezing around the blooms and trapping heat around them.

The National Weather Service has issued a freeze watch for Monday night into Tuesday morning.

Lynn says she's expecting cold weather all week.

Meteorologist Neil Dixon with the weather service says conditions are not likely to significantly improve until Saturday.

Dixon says people should wait before planting or buying plants. He recommends bringing potted plants inside.
