Hearings lay out plans for school lines in Berkeley

Posted: Updated:

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (WCIV) -- There was mixed reaction at the Berkeley County School District's meeting at Goose Creek Primary Monday night.

Parents, teachers, and just those that lived nearby attended the sessions in which new plans were revealed regarding school zoning lines. This rezoning will mean that some students may change schools in three years if the draft plan becomes the final plan.

"For the Hanahan Goose Creek area, we are going to have lots of opportunities to level our attendance zones so that there is more capacity at every school, alleviate the overcrowding, improve the safety conditions for all of our students and make sure that learning is a great environment regardless of the age or where the students attend," said Amy Kovach, Berkeley County School District's Director of Communications.

The district also unveiled the location for a new elementary school.

The goal of this new plan is to alleviate overcrowding at Goose Creek Primary, Hanahan Elementary and Sedgefield Intermediate as the population in that area continues to grow.

The plans discussed are not set in stone, which is why the district wanted to get community feedback.

The proposed changes would not go into effect until the 2015-2016 school year.
