BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- A 70-year-old man died on Highway 6 Wednesday afternoon, the coroner's office reported.

According to Berkeley County Deputy Coroner Darnell Hartwell, the accident happened around 4:30 p.m. when Joel Richardson, of Cross, ran off the right side of the road.

His truck traveled several hundred feet before hitting a tree. After Richardson left the roadway there was no indication that he tried to regain control of his vehicle, Hartwell said.

A witness told officials that Richardson had slumped over to the right side of the vehicle before hitting the tree.

There was no trauma to his body, the coroner's office said. Hartwell pronounced Mr. Richardson dead on the scene.

After the investigation by the Coroner's Office and the Highway Patrol, Hartwell ruled his death as a natural, adding that Richardson's death was not caused by the wreck.

Richardson was not wearing a seatbelt, officials said.
