FAA locks down Charleston, Hilton Head airspace for Biden visit

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV/AP) - The Federal Aviation Administration has issued a temporary flight restriction for Charleston and Hilton Head airports Thursday evening.

According to a release, the restriction is effective March 28 at 5:30 p.m. until April 1 at 2:30 p.m. The agency says there is a VIP coming into the area.

The White House says Vice President Joe Biden is heading to South Carolina for Easter weekend. The vice president and his wife, Jill Biden, were to arrive Thursday evening in Kiawah Island, near Charleston. He's not planning any public events while he's in town.

Officials have confirmed that Biden will be arriving in town later this evening, but did not officially nail down a time for his arrival.

Reports from other local media that Biden would arrive at 5 p.m. were well off their mark.

Biden has strong ties to South Carolina, and spent a weeklong vacation on Kiawah Island in 2009.

Biden will return to South Carolina in May when he headlines the annual Jefferson Jackson Dinner, a fundraiser that the South Carolina Democratic Party is holding in Columbia.
