AAA predicts gas price drop to boost Easter travel

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A drop in gasoline prices may mean more travel in South Carolina during the Easter holiday weekend.

AAA Carolinas says the average cost of a gallon of gas in the state has fallen 18 cents since Feb. 22, to $3.44.

The Charlotte, N.C., motor club says gas prices typically go up in early spring, when refineries do maintenance and switch over to summer blends. This year, the increase happened earlier than usual before going back down.

Many refineries have yet to transition to summer-blend gasoline, though, so AAA says it's unknown if prices have peaked for the spring.

The Charleston area has South Carolina's highest-priced gasoline at $3.50. Spartanburg has the state's cheapest gas, at $3.37.
