JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- Instead of sending SCE&G a check for their electric bill, one local school received a check for their efforts to use less electricity.

James Island Charter high School got over $82,000 for taking part in the EnergyWise Program and upgrading their lights throughout the school.

"Thanks to SCE&G's program, we've successfully completed facility lighting upgrades that will help greatly reduce our overall energy consumption and, ultimately, save us time and money, " said school principal Dr. Robert Bohnstengel.

According to a release from the Charleston County School District, the new energy efficient lights will reduce consumption by an estimated 288,625 kWh annually.
