West Ashley teacher arrested on sexual battery charges

Posted: Updated:

WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCIV) - The man accused of sex acts with a student at West Ashley High School while he was a teacher there has been charged with sexual battery.

According to Charleston County deputies, 27-year-old Eric Helms was charged after an investigation into a relationship he allegedly had with an 18-year-old student at the school.

The student told officials that the relationship was consenting, but Helms' position as an authority figure violates state law, officials said. Read the state law here.

The student and Helms began the relationship while the student was a teaching assistant in Helms' classroom. The affidavit states the pair had sex several times.

The victim told officials the relationship started in January, the affidavit shows. She claims the relationship started after Helms sent her a text in reference to a school-sponsored club meeting, she told officers.

According to the affidavit, the student says Helms asked her "to hang out one day," she claimed, adding "it kept going from there". She told officials that drugs and alcohol were not present during their trysts.

Detectives are working to determine if Helm's may have had other relationships with students however at this time it is not believed that there were any.

In a bond court hearing Friday night, Charleston County detective Lauren Ryan said Helms had no prior record and he fully cooperated with her investigation. Helms was given a $5,000 bond.

Helms is being held at the Charleston County Detention Center pending his bond.
