City officials were on hand to recognized a Tulsa man Monday morning for saving two women during a pit bull attack last month.

Mayor Dewey Bartlett presented Mike Harrell with two citizen appreciation awards Monday afternoon. Harrell was awarded for his efforts in saving the lives of two women when a pit bull started attacked both of them in a Tulsa neighborhood.

"You always think of a lot of things when you grow up and you always think of a lot of things that you'll be or you will do," Harrell said. "And getting called a hero isn't one of them."

Harrell continued to tell the room of officials, family and friends that he still thinks the whole situation was a matter of "being in the right place at the right time."

The incident happened back in March when TPD were sent to the area of 2027 N. Lewis Pl. in reference to a woman being attacked by a pit bull, according to previous reports. When officers arrived at the scene they found one woman screaming and two "down in the front yard of the residence and a third woman screaming."

When police arrived at the scene Harrell told officers that he got into his truck and drove to the area where the women were being attacked by the pit bull. He grabbed his .40 caliber pistol, ran to the yard and fired a shot into the dog when it came towards him.

Both women had extensive dog bite wounds to their faces, arms and legs and were admitted to an area hospital.

Mayor Bartlett was joined by Tulsa Police Chief Chuck Jordan and other city officials during the ceremony.
