1.5 million sign up for SC's credit monitoring

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Nearly 1.5 million people have signed up for a year of credit monitoring offered by South Carolina after the hacking of the Revenue Department's computer system last year.

The State newspaper reported  midnight Sunday was the deadline to sign up for the service. Those who signed up already have until May 31 to sign up their children if they qualify.

Hackers stole electronic information on nearly 4 million individual tax returns and those of more than 650,000 businesses last year.

The state is paying Experian $12 million to provide a year of credit monitoring.

State lawmakers and Gov. Nikki Haley are considering offers to extend the credit protection beyond a year.

A bill under consideration in the Senate would extend the protection for 10 years.
