CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Sofa Super Store fire of 2007 left nine firefighters dead. Lowcountry firefighters said they learned safety lessons from that fire that they used in their response to Tuesday morning's East Bay Street fire.

"The second floor roof fell in and that was what took the life of the Charleston 9 - when the roof fell in at the Sofa Super Store. Because of a lot of safety measures and good work by the people in Charleston Fire Department, we're now prepared to be more on guard for those kinds of things," said Lowcountry Firefighter Support Team leader Gerald Mishoe.

He said the firefighters left the building at the appropriate time.

"They were inside the building fighting the fire. It got tenable in there and so they backed out, went to a defensive operation. And when the roof fell in no one was there," Mishoe said.

Mishoe said the team's slogan is "everybody goes home," and he was happy that happened Tuesday.
