MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) – Moms worried about gun violence braved the wind Wednesday to hold signs along Highway 17 in front of Lindsay Graham's Mount Pleasant office.

"None of these gentlemen have met with us personally so, we thought this was a great way to get their attention," said Susan Smith, president of the South Carolina Democratic Council.

The women are local members of a national group called Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense.

The group is asking Congress to pass a national background check system for gun sales.

"I am not arguing that responsible gun owners give up their guns," said Smith. "I think that I, along with everyone here today, think that a start to curtail the gun violence is by having a universal background check."

Goffiney McLaren is from Northern Ireland but, has a son who was born in the United States.

"We had troubles there for 30 years and during the 30 years of so-called war in Ireland, 3,000 people were killed. And, here in this county, 3,000 people in a year is absolutely nothing," said McLaren.

McLaren says ever since the shooting at Columbine, she worried about her son's safety. She says no mother should have to endure that.

"If you can't be confident about your child going to school and be confident about your child returning home from school, it's a lack of human rights. It can't be anything other than a lack of human rights," said McLaren.

The organization says 92 percent of people in the United States agree with instituting a background check system.

According to the Center for American Progress, South Carolina is the seventh-deadliest state as it pertains to gun murders.
