Race day fashion trends: Neons, religious sayings, and funky headbands

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - As tens of thousands of runners get ready to lace up their running shoes for the annual Cooper River Bridge Run Saturday, some race day fashion trends are emerging that are pretty hard to miss.

Here are some hot trends to look out for this year.

One trend that seems to be dominating the Charleston running stores and Bridge Run Expo is bright neon colored gear. It seems like we're back in the 1980's-- neon oranges, pinks, and yellows seem to be all the rage this year. And we're not just talking colorful T-shirts.

One runner we spoke with says she will be covered in neon all over. Laura, a runner from the upstate who competes in the race every year, will be decked out in head-to-toe multicolored neon, from her hot pink headband to her neon purple and yellow Nikes.

"I want to stand out and I want my husband to be able to find me in the crowd if we get separated," Laura said.

There are neon shorts, leggings, and even hot pink socks and sunglasses with multicolored neon rims. Now that's a bright idea.

Religious Sayings

Many runners seem to rely on their faith to get them through the exhausting 10K race.

Another emerging trend at the Bridge Run Expo was faith-related gear. Christianity dominated one booth with women's t-shirts with "Faith" sprawled across the front, a hat with the Christian fish symbol on it, and a men's shirt with the bible verse 2 Timothy 4:7: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."

Inspiring words for men and women of faith to keep in mind while making the 6.2 mile trek over the bridge.

Funky Headbands

For a woman, keeping your hair from flying in your face could mean the difference between a great race and a flyaway nightmare. Luckily, headband options for runners are endless and limitless. There were at least four different headband booths at the Expo with spunky, colorful, and downright hilarious designs. Some of the headbands have comical and inspirational messages on them, such as "Will Run for Beer," "Suck it up, cupcake," "my mascara runs faster than you," and "Training for the Zombie Apocalypse."

Other designs included glitter, chevron patterns, floral, sequins, lace, polka dots, and animal print headbands. These booths were extremely popular with the ladies -- and seemed to appeal to more of the "party crowd" of women who are just running the race to have fun with friends.

Jamie and Jessie, two self-proclaimed "glam walkers" at the Expo, said the headbands add a little bit of funk, originality, and flare to their otherwise drab race-day attire.

"We got to glam it up somehow," Jamie said.

One popular headband booth at the Expo called "Headbands of Hope" featured adorable glitter, chevron, and lace headbands. For every headband purchased, one is given to a little girl with cancer; and $1 is donated to St. Baldrick's Foundation.
