Charleston landmark predicts Bridge Run week will be 'best in 5 years'

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- Patriots Point executive director Mac Burdette has weathered rough waters recently. The historic U.S.S. Yorktown floats on Patriots Point waters, accompanied by several museums and rows of military aircraft.

But the Naval & Maritime Museum's future has been jeopardized by financial woes.

Burdette said Patriots Point is rebounding now, however, and being in Charleston is a big part of that success.

"Certainly we want to give credit to what's going on with the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau and with Charleston being the best city to visit in the nation," he said.

Burdette said Patriots Point could be experiencing its highest-grossing week in five years, with the culmination of the weekend's activities.

"Anything that brings in 40,000 people to your community, you're going to get a piece of that action. That's what you hope. A lot of our marketing downtown is geared toward that because we know runners will be downtown," Burdette said.

Burdette said Patriots Point made $51,000 Tuesday and $53,000 Wednesday. They were two of the highest-revenue days in the last five years, he said.

"We're hoping that's an indication that a lot of what we've been doing the last two years is paying off," Burdette said.

Burdette credited spring break and the Easter holiday with the high-revenue days and said he expected Sunday to match them.

Burdette expected revenue to be around $31,000 Saturday. He said the morning will be slow, but the afternoon should pick up, once people finish the race and can rest. He said Bridge Run tourists meet Patriots Point's target consumer.

"I would hope all the other attractions in Charleston are seeing the same as what we're seeing," he said.

The South Carolina Aquarium also had a successful week prior to the Bridge Run.

"Thursday was our busiest day in several years with close to 5,000 visitors," the Aquarium's Kate Dittloff said.

She said the busy Thursday was preceded by "several days of solid attendance."
