Bridge Runners pleased with expo location change

Charleston, S.C. (WCIV) -- On this expo day there were familiar sites, like checking lists for bib numbers and picking up race gear but in a different location.

"In like two seconds we can pull up the number, I just put in their first name, last name and search. Then their bib number comes up right here and I give it to them and they walk in," said Maddie Kennedy, a first time volunteer.

The change in location from the Gaillard Auditorium in downtown Charleston to the North Charleston Convention Center could have prompted complaints from runners because moving the expo out of Charleston is breaking tradition, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

"You had to walk through a lot of different places going around it was much different. Here you can just walk into a wide open area, much better," said return walker Bob Houpt of Salem, Va.

The almost 200 vendor booths were in the same room with the bib and race bag pick-up and the vendors were excited about the change.

"You felt like you were shuffled through at the Gaillard, not a bad place, but I think much more airy open space, I think better parking, much better because you don't have to pay," said Carolyn Varndell, a vendor.

Assistant race director Joanna Jackson said she wanted this year's Cooper River Bridge Run to be convenient for its 38,000 participants. The fast moving lines for bibs seemed keep runners moving.

"This is the first time we've done it at the expo, we usually go to the store in Mt. Pleasant but it's really easy to get in and out," said Mt. Pleasant resident Ann Ferhmann.
