A run to remember a fallen soldier

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – As others laced up their best tennis shoes, Citadel alumni and cadets trekked the 10K course in their camouflage pants and combat boots.

They proudly carried the 3rd Infantry division flag through the race for Sgt. Aaron Wittman.

"I have no words to describe how I am feeling right now," said Andrew Barton, who graduated with Wittman.

It is barely three months since Wittman died Jan. 10 in Afghanistan from injuries he suffered when his unit was attacked. It was the 28-years-old's second tour.

Barton described Wittman as a man with an "infectious smile" who was humble and always made the best out of the worst situation.

"Where he is here in person or in spirit, he is here and we're happy to do this for him," he said at the starting line.

That run was an opportunity to raise funds and awareness about the foundation in his memory.

"It's all been really great to see so much people rally around it," said friend Robby Jackson. "Our goal is to reach a fully funded endowment scholarship that will be lifelong, not just a temporary thing."

As they crossed the finish line, cadets said they were proud to be part of Wittman's tribute.
