US Forest Service doing preventative burns in SC

Posted: Updated:

NEWBERRY, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina sheriff says the smoke some people may see in a couple of northern counties is part of a plan to make the backcountry safer in the long run.

The Newberry County Sheriff's Office said Sunday the U.S. Forest Service is burning nearly 2,000 acres in the Molly's Rock recreation area.

The sheriff's office says smoke from the blaze will be visible for several miles and drift north and west toward Union County. The forest service will control the planned fire, which is happening to rid the area of flammable brush.
