Yorktown to host Pinewood Derby for Scouts

Posted: Updated:

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum is playing host to the 2013 Etiwan Cup Pinewood Derby on board the USS Yorktown on Saturday.

The retired aircraft carrier's Smokey Stover Theater will house a six-lane, 44-foot track in an event put on by the museum and the Boy Scouts of America Coastal Carolina Council.

Qualifications begin at noon in Hangar Bay 1 and the races start an hour later. Winners advance to the District Etiwan Cup races.

"For generations, Pinewood Derby Races have been synonymous with the tradition of Scouting," said Patriots Point Executive Director Mac Burdette. "As one of the nation's top overnight camping destinations for Scouts, the USS Yorktown will provide the perfect setting for our overnight campers as well as scouts from the tri-county region to participate in these races."

Registration is $5 and includes a patch, membership in the competition and access to the full museum for four people.

Parking is still $5.
