COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCIV) -- Investigators have discovered that one of the victims of Tuesday night's shooting was an innocent bystander.
A spokesperson for the Colleton County Sheriff's Office says the dispatch center started getting calls about a possible shooting just before 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Dispatchers were told that people in two vehicles were shooting at each other in the area commonly known as "West Side." Westside Lane is located behind Walmart near I-95 in Colleton County.
Law Enforcement responded to the area immediately and, a very short time later, the Sheriff's Office was notified two gunshot victims were brought into the Colleton Regional Hospital by two separate vehicles.
Colleton County Sheriff Andy Strickland has identified the victims as Rebecca Marshelle Dewitt and Deon Hampton.
Strickland says Dewitt, a 34 year old mother of three, was shot one time while she was inside a vehicle in her driveway after returning from the store with her family. Her family took her to hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
When officers arrived at the hospital, they found Hampton with apparent gunshot wounds he said he received in the Walmart area. Hampton was transported to a Charleston hospital for treatment.
The Sheriff's Office is investigating his possible involvement in the shooting and subsequent death of Rebecca Dewitt.
Investigators are piecing together the sequence of events that led to the shooting. Witnesses have said that a vehicle came down Westside Lane, which is a dead-end street, and turned around. As it was heading out, another vehicle came in and the occupants of both vehicles fired at each other. It is unknown at this time whether others may have been injured.
