CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Komen Lowcountry Race for the Cure celebrates 20 years this October and is already gearing up with early registration.

"Race for the Cure is our signature fundraising event, which supports our community grant program," said Marketing and Events Manager Lisa Jones. "Plus, it's just plain fun."

It's that grant program that recently allowed the Lowcountry Komen affiliate to award more than $500,000 to ten different local organizations. Those organization will now able to provide more free mammograms, breast cancer treatments and education to hopefully save lives.

"We are continuing to work on incentives for individual and team participants," said Jones. "Our goal is to get people excited early and have a big 20th."

Last year, some 10,000 runners and walkers converged on Daniel Island for the annual 5k race that raised more than $800,000.

"Our goal this year is $1,000,000 in which 75 percent stays local and 25 percent goes directly to breast cancer treatment," said Jones.

Every year the race attracts a variety of people, from breast cancer survivors, their families, those who have lost loved ones to the disease and those who know someone who's been touched by it.

Last year, Charleston City Fire Captain Bobby Wright took part, wearing 100 pounds of hot pink firefighting gear. He's already training to do it again this year.

"I just want to make sure this disease gets a cure," said Wright.

If you don't want to run or walk, you can always volunteer.

"We are always looking for volunteers for the race, especially on race day," said Jones. "Generally we need 400 to 500 volunteers."

So mark your calendars. This year's race is Oct. 19 at the Family Circle Cup Stadium on Daniel Island. To register early, just go to www.komenlowcountry.org. Organizers say they will be offering incentives.

"Our goal is to get people excited early and have a big 20th," said Jones. "There will be more to come."
