Riverdogs end road trip with 12-5 win over West Virginia

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, WV – The game got underway Wednesday at a rare 10:30am start, but the RiverDogs' offense showed up after the clock struck noon to the tune of 11 runs, all coming in the seventh inning as Charleston (5-2) swept their way past the West Virginia Power,12-5, at Appalachian Power Park. With the victory, the RiverDogs complete their season-opening seven-game road trip with a 5-2 mark.

West Virginia jumped on RiverDogs starter Cesar Vargas to the tune of four runs in his five innings of work. Vargas had six strikeouts on the afternoon to go along with two walks. He left the game with his team trailing, but that wouldn't last long.

The RiverDogs' bats came alive in the top of the seventh as Charleston batted around and then some. The inning started with Saxon Butler's single, which was one of eight hits in the frame. The final line in the top of the seventh read 11 runs on eight hits, three errors and only one man left on base. Claudio Custodio notched his first hit of the season and the final run for the RiverDogs with a solo homer with two outs in the top of the ninth.

Claudio Custodio led the way for Charleston scoring three times and hitting his first homer of the season. Four other RiverDogs chipped in with two hits a piece on the afternoon.

West Virginia starter Clay Holmes, the 15th ranked prospect in the Pittsburgh Pirates' organization, was the lone bright spot for the Power as he threw five innings of shutout ball and allowed two hits while striking out three and walking three.

West Virginia (1-6) scored four runs in the third stanza and added one more run in the eighth. Right fielder Josh Bell provided most of the power for the Power as the sixth-rated prospect, according to MLB.com, went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer, a double and two runs scored.

Charleston opens their home slate with a seven-game homestand Thursday as the Augusta GreenJackets come to town for four games. The RiverDogs send RHP Rafael DePaula (0-0, 4.15 ERA) to the mound for the opener, while Augusta counters with RHP Joan Gregorio (1-0, 1.80 ERA). T
