ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WCIV) -- Orangeburg County Sheriff's deputies tried to make contact with their local registered sex offenders and found 16 of them have gone missing.
According to Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell, deputies called on 146 registered sex offenders as part of a multi-agency effort to verify their locations.
Ravenell said deputies, investigators, and members of the U.S. Marshal Task Force made contact with 130 offenders and will continue to try to locate the other 16. If those offenders aren't found, arrest warrants will be issued.
"In our constant effort to keep this county safe, this is an area we have zero tolerance for those that chose to break the law," said Sheriff Ravenell. "You know your responsibilities to this county and we will ensure that you uphold them."
